Frequently Asked Questions

Taking the first steps towards therapy, or starting with a new therapist, can be daunting.  It's ok to have questions and doubts.

If you don't find the answer to your question here or on my other pages, please don't hesitate to contact me.

How much do sessions cost and how long is each session?

Each session (online or in-person) is an hour long and costs £50

How many sessions will I need?

Every client is different so this varies for each individual. Together we will discuss the number of sessions you may want and continue to discuss this as we progress with your sessions.  It might be that you want open-ended therapy or don't know how many sessions you would like - that's ok too.  There will never been any obligation to attend a set number of sessions.

Are our sessions confidential?

It is important that you feel able to be open and speak freely with me.  Anything you choose to bring to our sessions will be completely confidential, with the exception of a small number of specific circumstances.  These exceptions are outlined in our Therapy Agreement and will be discussed in our first session together.

How do I know you're qualified?

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).  This means that my qualifications have been verified by them in order to be on the register.  The BACP Register is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).  My BACP register number is 400372 and the register is publicly available here.

What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

These terms are often used interchangeably.  However, some people believe that counselling refers to short-term therapy that deals with specific issues, whilst psychotherapy is often regarded as being "deeper" and undertaken over a longer period of time.

Whatever you call it, we will discuss your reasons for coming to therapy along with your needs and goals during our brief chat and/or first session and take it from there.

How do you handle and store my data?

Your privacy is very important to me and you can be confident that your personal information will be kept safe and secure and will only be used for the purpose it was given to me. I adhere to current data protection legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (EU/2016/679) (the GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.  I am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (Registration no. C1402387). You can find my full privacy policy here.

Where can I park?

There is no parking available for clients at the practice.

There is some on-street parking in neighbouring streets, but please be mindful of permit-only areas. There are a number of pay and display car parks in the area.  The nearest is Wilton Road Car Park, next to the library. If you wish to time your visit with a trip to the supermarket then local supermarkets offer 90 minutes to 2 hours free parking walking distance from the practice.

Is your building/room accessible?

My room is on the first floor and unfortunately, due to the age and nature of the building, there is no lift available.  There is a secure handrail, in addition to the bannister, for those who might need it to climb the stairs.  Online sessions are available for those who are unable to access the 1st floor.

Do you have a toilet for clients to use?

Yes, there is a toilet on the ground floor of the building.

What should I do if I feel unsafe or suicidal and need immediate support?

Whilst we might talk about self harm or suicide in our sessions, The Melton Therapist is not a crisis service.  Please see below for a list of services that can help you:
